Bulgaria Risks Losing Billions If It Refuses to Negotiate in the "Lukoil" Case
Warnings of a potential multibillion-dollar arbitration claim against Bulgaria by Litasco (Lukoil’s Swiss trading company) are now materializing into concrete legal proceedings. The case arising from government intervention and the appointment of a special administrator at Lukoil Neftohim Burgas has plunged the country into one of the most serious investment disputes in our recent history. This was the assessment of Dr. Ivaylo Dermenjiev, co-founder and senior managing partner at the law firm “Simeonov & Dermenjiev,” vice-chairman of the Arbitration Court at the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), and an expert in private international law.
